ok, first you make 5 piles.... (when typing that i accidentaly left out the L, so it read 'first you make 5 pies". mmmmm pie)

but precisely how you fashion these piles is a key factor...

i mean, if you start from the right side instead of the left (i prefer left), it produces a completely different set of starting cards than if you would start on the right.

you make 5 piles in a straight line in front of you. starting from the left side if you wish to play my way, start the first pile by laying a card face-DOWN. do this for piles 2-4 going right. the fifth pile will have one card, face-UP.
you then start at pile 1 again, placing cards face-DOWN on each pile 1 2 3 and 4 respectively, only the card placed on pile 4 will be face-UP this time, and no card placed on pile 5.
repeat this pattern.

in the end you will have this:
pile 1: 4 face-DOWN cards and one face-UP card on top.
pile 2: 3 face-DOWN cards and one face-UP card on top.
pile 3: 2 face-DOWN cards and one face-UP card on top.
pile 4: 1 face-DOWN card and one face-UP card on top.
pile 5: 1 face-UP card

the point of the game is to get rid of all 5 piles.

you will build 2 piles inbetween you and the other person.

the cards that you have left after dealing the 5 piles won't be used often.

one thing i forgot to mention is that in the beginning you deal all the cards between 2 people. i guess you could play with 3 or 4, but you might need to use 4 piles instead of 5... anyway...

ok. so the leftover cards. you say one two three SPIT and you take the top card from the leftover pile and place it in the middle. then you build off the two piles with the face up cards you have in the 5 piles infront of you.

for example...

if the 5 cards in front of you are an ace, a 5, a 6, another 5, and a queen, and the two cards put into the middle were a jack and a 4....

you can play your queen on the jack. if you had a ten you could play that too, but then not the queen.
you can play both the 5s on the 4 and then the 6.

so you can double or triple the cards, they just have to be in order when placed on the 2 middle piles.

the fun fast part is when there is a 5 and you have a 4 and the other person has a 6 and you both race to play yours cards. you may use both hands to play.

in the beginning when you first have your 5 piles and havent started playing yet, you may place noe fo your 5s on the other 5 (or double up any other card you have) and then turn over the face down card beneath the one you took away. this rule comes in handy when one of you barely has any cards left.

if at any point, neither of you can play anything at all, you count to three and say SPIT and put the top card fom your "leftover cards" and put it on a pile in the middle. play resumes.

the first person to get rid of their pile slaps a pile in the middle. you should always go for the smallest pile, seeing as you DONT want cards in this game. you then keep the pile you slapped, while the sucker across from you gets the bigger pile. you start over in dealing your cards. you may shuffle them if you wish, but the game goes faster if you don't, and trust me, the game takes forever to finish anyway.

there are wrap-arounds, meaning if you have an ace and a 2 and there's a king sitting in a middle pile, you may play the ace and the 2.

one someone gets rid of enough cards that they don't have enough to make the fulle 5 piles described in comment 1, the player with more cards spits one card. you play on one pile, and when you finish,, you slap the empty spot beside the pile, pre-determined which side of course, and the person who slapped it gets no cards. how would the game end if there were always 2 piles?

you: mine are a 3, ace, 8, jack and king, respectively.

me: ok cool.
us: one, two, three, SPIT!

me: i spit a king!
you: i spit a 4!

you: im putting my king on the king and my 3 on the 4!
me: and i'm putting my queen on the king!

you: ok now i have a 4 and a 5.
me: and i have a 2---
you: I'M PUTTING MY 4 ON THE 3!!!!!
me: NO!!! I was gonna put the 2 on!!!!
you: well I said i was putting it there first!!! i'm putting my 5 on the 4 too.

and so the game goes...
